Cycling Safety

Riding your bicycle responsibly on designated Bike Routes according to all of the rules and regulations is the best safety practice you can follow. You have the same rights and duties as the driver of a vehicle.

The Government of British Columbia requires that all cyclists wear an approved bike helmet. An approved helmet should have CSA, ANSI or SNELL standards approval clearly marked on it. The law also requires that all cyclists riding at night have a front white light visible for a minimum of 150 metres, a rear red light that should be visible for a minimum of 100 metres and a red rear reflector visible for a minimum of 100 metres. BC law also mandates that the brakes on your bike must be powerful enough so that you can bring the bike to a quick stop.

There are also restrictions about riding bikes on Provincial Highways, with a few exceptions.

The Canadian Cycling Association has some safety tips for cyclists  issued through the CAN -BIKE program.
